We took part in a SumDog National Competition. Out of 38 schools that participated, our class came 5th, which we think is pretty good.
Some of us learnt about parallel lines and perpendicular lines. We also talked about what a perimeter is. That it is the distance around the very outside of an object.

ELECTION 2017
Rangimarie Island now has its own coalition government. Yes, that's right! We held an election with leaders of parties campaigning (even balloons were in the mix).
The results were...
Ruru Party 16/44 votes
Helping the Environment Party 11/44
Farmers Opportunity Party 10/44
Safety Party 7/44
Because no party had more than half the votes, leaders had further talks about a coalition.
In the end the decider was Ben, leader of the Safety Party. He went with Ruru First to form a coalition.

The Naming of Our Island - "Rangimarie"
The Process
We voted on our favourite 5 island names, which narrowed 21 names down to just 10.
From here we used a thinking tool called an "elimination chart"
See pic below...
And the winner... Rangimarie Island (Rangimarie the Maori word meaning "Peaceful").
Votes could only by cast against each new pair of names.
A great tool if you find you are really having difficulty deciding between your options.
We have also nearly finished painting...!

ROMERO BRITTO artwork
We have studied an artist who originally grew up in Brazil and later in life moved to Miami USA.
He combines elements of cubism, pop art and graffiti painting in his work, using vibrant colours and bold patterns as a visual expression of hope and happiness.

Lenticular Images
A bit of maths (measurement) combined with a bit of art and you can make your own lenticular image from 2 pictures.
Cut each image into strips.

Merge the images together.
Fold in a concertina fashion (like a fan).
The Tiger and the Fox below are on the same piece of paper.
From different angles the picture changes - like magic!

Wallace Corporation Plant Out Day
The bus arrived at the Wallace Corporation just on 9.30 a.m with 22 excited students on board, decked out with gumboots and the odd spade. Yes, it was plant out day!!
After meeting up with Sarah and Hilton we strolled through young native plants alongside a stream, crossed a wooden bridge and weaved our way to where the bush meets the paddocks on a hilltop. A quick demonstration by Sarah about planting technique and the mission began.
Though cool in the shade, it wasn't long before digging holes, sleeving out plants, teasing out roots and staking the plants with bamboo rods, had us almost sweating. A few areas were a little boggy and the odd gumboot became locked in place, much to the "eeekk" of it's owner!
All in all, we had successfully found homes for over 300 plants - mainly flaxes, karamu, mahoe and ribbonwood. Kanuka and manuku had to be withdrawn from the plant out list while there is the possibility of myrtle rust (a serious fungal disease which severely attacks members of the myrtle family of plants).
When the final plant was lovingly placed in the ground, Sarah took us for a circuit walk through other areas. She talked about the history of other planting years and the signs that showed it. We could see how plants 2,3,4 and 5 years old had changed in their growth.
Many thanks to our parent / grandparent helpers on the day.
A day of making a difference for the future in our community.

Sailor the Puffer Fish
Today we had a visit from Chris Lam Sam and 'Sailor the Puffer Fish.'
We learnt about the triggers of asthma...
Pollen
Smoke
Viruses
Dust mites
Pet hair
Colder climate
If someone is having an asthma attack try to limit their movement.
Have someone stay with them while another goes for help or gets their inhaler.
6 puffs - 6 breaths - 6 minutes . Repeat if needed. You won't overdo it!
Call 111 if no improvement in their condition.

Maths - Enlargements
We have had fun taking small cartoon type pictures and enlarging them by a scale factor.
A scale factor of 2 means the image is twice as big as the original.
See Caitlin's enlargement of a shark below!

NYLD National Young Leaders Day
NYLD 2017
Our 5 House Leaders attended NYLD at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton yesterday.
There were inspiring messages from people who are making a difference in their communities.
The crowd of over 800 students was amazing.
The Big screen and booming music was very theatrical.
There was even a performance at the end by the band "Nomad". They played the 'Oh My My' song. It was impressive.

The Art of Geometry (fancy word for shapes etc...)
Yesterday we learnt about translation, reflection and symmetry.
We had three workshop activities. One activity used rubber stamps to
show a shape moving from one place to another (horizontally, diagonally and vertically).
We used punch craft to make shapes that we could reflect across a dotted mirror line.
The third activity we folded paper and cut out shapes to show symmetry.
Coming soon - Tesselation artwork...

ANZAC Biscuit and Feijoa Muffin Making
Today we made great use of fruit from feijoa trees.
Thanks everyone who contributed! (including fruit from the school trees)😊
The Anzac biscuit recipe also worked a treat.
See us use technology in our recipe learning.
Teamwork skills - participating and contributing were a big part of the day.
Thanks Mrs Thomson for organising the experience!

New Lives Animal Rescue
Yesterday, Te Whare Ruru enjoyed a special afternoon visit by Donna from New Lives Animal Rescue in Te Aroha. She brought with her two special guest dogs. Harvey a three legged chocolate coloured labrador and a puppy named Brandy.
We learnt safety around dogs and how it is important to ask permission from any dog owner before petting their dog.. Also, to pet the dogs under their front chin and chest instead of on top of their head. We practised dropping to the ground and turning into a "rock" to help protect us if ever attacked by a dog.

Putt for the $
Not only did Te Whare Ruru have a shared experience this morning of trying out their putting skills with a golf club, they used this experience in their recount writing. The aim of the challenge was to putt the ball so that it stopped on the cardboard disc. Should it do so, you would win the amount shown on the card.
Great try everyone - there were a number of very close putts that had us quite excited! A potential Harvest Festival activity for Friday evening.

Thanks St Joseph's School Waitara
This morning our class was very excited to receive a courier post package from Room 5 at St Josephs Waitara. We read through their poster and passed around their postcard metaphors. At lunchtime Rylee put together their postcard jigsaw. (see below)

#GET WRITING NZ
We have completed a project that connects with another school in NZ - St Joseph's Waitara in the Taranaki region. We collaboratively worked together on a poster that had questions about who we are as a class and a school. We wrote metaphors about ourselves on postcards. We put these together as a jigsaw puzzle and they made a big message "Talk with people who help you see the World differently"
😏
