Today we had a visit from Chris Lam Sam and 'Sailor the Puffer Fish.'
We learnt about the triggers of asthma...
Pollen
Smoke
Viruses
Dust mites
Pet hair
Colder climate
If someone is having an asthma attack try to limit their movement.
Have someone stay with them while another goes for help or gets their inhaler.
6 puffs - 6 breaths - 6 minutes . Repeat if needed. You won't overdo it!
Call 111 if no improvement in their condition.

Maths - Enlargements
We have had fun taking small cartoon type pictures and enlarging them by a scale factor.
A scale factor of 2 means the image is twice as big as the original.
See Caitlin's enlargement of a shark below!

NYLD National Young Leaders Day
NYLD 2017
Our 5 House Leaders attended NYLD at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton yesterday.
There were inspiring messages from people who are making a difference in their communities.
The crowd of over 800 students was amazing.
The Big screen and booming music was very theatrical.
There was even a performance at the end by the band "Nomad". They played the 'Oh My My' song. It was impressive.

The Art of Geometry (fancy word for shapes etc...)
Yesterday we learnt about translation, reflection and symmetry.
We had three workshop activities. One activity used rubber stamps to
show a shape moving from one place to another (horizontally, diagonally and vertically).
We used punch craft to make shapes that we could reflect across a dotted mirror line.
The third activity we folded paper and cut out shapes to show symmetry.
Coming soon - Tesselation artwork...

ANZAC Biscuit and Feijoa Muffin Making
Today we made great use of fruit from feijoa trees.
Thanks everyone who contributed! (including fruit from the school trees)😊
The Anzac biscuit recipe also worked a treat.
See us use technology in our recipe learning.
Teamwork skills - participating and contributing were a big part of the day.
Thanks Mrs Thomson for organising the experience!

New Lives Animal Rescue
Yesterday, Te Whare Ruru enjoyed a special afternoon visit by Donna from New Lives Animal Rescue in Te Aroha. She brought with her two special guest dogs. Harvey a three legged chocolate coloured labrador and a puppy named Brandy.
We learnt safety around dogs and how it is important to ask permission from any dog owner before petting their dog.. Also, to pet the dogs under their front chin and chest instead of on top of their head. We practised dropping to the ground and turning into a "rock" to help protect us if ever attacked by a dog.
